Haven't been keeping up lately. We had our August book club last night with The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas by John Boyne. Wonderful book. I highly recommend it. Everyone said it was one they wouldn't soon forget and made them really think about what happened in Germany and how it might have been seen through a child's eyes.
Next month our book selection is The Deep End of the Ocean by Jacquelyn Mitchard.
3-year-old Ben Cappadora is kidnapped from a hotel lobby where his mother is checking into her 15th high school reunion. His disappearance tears the family apart and invokes separate experiences of anguish, denial, and self-blame. Marital problems and delinquency in Ben's older brother (in charge of him the day of his kidnapping) ensue. Mitchard depicts the family's friction and torment--along with many gritty realities of family life--with the candor of a journalist and compassion of someone who has seemingly been there.
I think this book will cause you to think out how you would react, how you would cope and if you could survive something this tragic. I felt the ending was wonderful. It left you to make some of your own conclusions about how their lives end up and it was a good feeling for me. Hope you'll join us. We meet at the bookstore at 6:30 in the evening on Sept. 14th.
