CourtingTrouble by Deanne Gist

Next week on June the 9th will be the Book Lover's Reading Group Meeting and the book is Courting Trouble by Deanne Gist. We have read Deanne Gist before and fell in love with her writing style. She mixes a lot of historical fact into her stories which are usually set in the late 1800's or early 1900's. This stories gives a wonderful view of the early beginnings of women's rights and the coming of the bicycle. The main character Essie Spreckelmeyer has endured thirty years, and has, in many of the townspeople’s minds, failed to catch a husband. Impatience leads her to try and give God a helping hand with the project. Listing the attributes and drawbacks of the eligible men in her small home town of Corsicana, Texas, she randomly picks the first one her finger lands on and sets out on the mission of seizing herself a man. Her antics will bring you quiet delight and may leave you wondering a little about the end. She is a wonderful thought out character, filled with charm and a personality that will bring joy to all women still demanding their rights to do what they enjoy.
I hope you'll come to the meeting. It will be at 6:30pm at the store.
The next meeting for the Dinner Bookclub will be June the 16th. The book is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. This is a wonderful book of historical fiction.
January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb….

As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends—and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society—born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island—boasts a charming, funny, deeply human cast of characters, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all.

Juliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society’s members, learning about their island, their taste in books, and the impact the recent German occupation has had on their lives. Captivated by their stories, she sets sail for Guernsey, and what she finds will change her forever.

Written with warmth and humor as a series of letters, this novel is a celebration of the written word in all its guises, and of finding connection in the most surprising ways. You will enjoy this delightful book, and the unforgettable characters. Come join us at Pappy's Barbeque for dinner and review.
